Considering impaling was perfected by the Ottomans - the skill demanded excellent knowledge of internal anatomy. Skilled impaler will avoid perforating all major organs, thus preventing the quick death. The goal was for the victim to suffer for days before dying slow and agonizing death.

Thank you so much! One of the books I read in my youth contained a very detailed scene, that I still recall in my nightmares from time to time.

Interesting. So many great Russian writers we in the West never heard of. Not long ago I discovered Leonid Andreyev ...he is as good as anyone.
