This is an intense whodunnit short series with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant as the mains; also Donald Sutherland and a kid, whomever. As a short series, the action and mystery are condensed, so you stay in the fold as it unfolds.
Grant is good, using his puppy dog looks to intense ends. Kidman, usually a good actor, seems to be searching for a way to portray her character. Imo, she doesn't quite find it. I kept wanting to see her snap out of it, whatever 'it' was. They raise an immature brat in upper class New York. The kid, whomever, grates on me. I kept wanting to slap the shit out of him, and he plays far too much into this story. Maybe wanting to shake people up is a sign of good involvement. I don't know. The support actors are terrific. Sutherland and the high-priced lawyer, Noma Dumezweni (yeah, her), especially.
But the story is the thing here. Seeing self-destruction on this level in people who are on top is very disconcerting. Affair, side pregnancy, psycho bitches, lies, past histories revealed, then murder. The whole enchilada in a short take. Who did it and why? The directional finger points here and there, spotlighting almost everyone before coming home. Even then, is it the truth?
I read some interview with Grant, who said that he never intended to be the light-romance Brit, but that was his career. This was a chance to gain some depth, and do it by building on his forte.
Worth seeing for the entanglements. Intense, and you won't know until the end. Maybe not even then.
Follow Ups:
Most of the time I found myself wondering how much plastic surgery Kidman has had (way too easy given how many closeups she had), when or not her brow would overcome the Botox and actually furrow, and how it has turned her mouth when closed into something resembling that of a scary ventriloquist's dummy.

VERY American... almost TOO American. So it depends on whether you like that style.
It kept me interested enough to look forward to each episode.
As a sort of cultural anthropology look at the extreme upper class lifestyle of pre-pandemic NYC, it's pretty great. Fantastic photography of the city and the lavish residences.
As a whodunit, it's pretty standard stuff. Lots of pointers in various directions to keep the viewer uncertain. This has been done often, and it is a winning formula, but it is nothing new.
But I did enjoy the acting all the way around. Hugh Grant is the standout, playing against his charming bloke persona, but also using it as part of a fairly complex personality. I thought the rest of them were fine, Donald Sutherland especially as infinitely rich curmudgeon.
If there is nothing that is really going to stay with me for long, I do like stylish murder mysteries, and this is one.
Twenty years over it.
.
of all the films she's been in the only one I remember is 'Dead Calm' and I had no idea who she was at the time
I know that she's appeared in several I've seen, I just can't name them or any of her characters ... which might actually be a compliment except I recall recognizing her, but then little else
regards,
I don't remember the name of her character in "To Die For" myself. But I sure remember some of the scenes. . .
(Wonderful movie BTW!)
she needs to leave her upper lip alone. No more botox!
case in point ...
I've not seen that flick ...
she has been blessed with a classy chassis though
perhaps I'll look it up if I can fit it into my 'busy' schedule
seriously, I've been pretty busy ... things should lighten up soon though
notice the 'descending steps' in the post composition? a technique that was acquired from my time as a Hallmark greeting card writer that I aspired to but never actually performed. also done in reverse as a two step!
with regards,
...I am sorry I paid for the season.
At least according to 23andMe.
They did another revision of their analysis of my spit, and they took away my entire Scandinavian heritage and replaced it with Ukrainian! The nerve!
but they took it back! I was disappointed.
It started out as 0.5%, then went up to 0.6% - now it's back down to 0.5%.
I would be afraid of some surprising discoveries. :) A 3/4 Chinese, maybe?
So - how are your hopak lessons going? :)
This could also explain why I've had a mysterious, long-time fascination with the ads (some on this very site!) for Ukrainian mail-order brides! ;-)
Might save you whole lot of trouble. :)
But some of the highlights, imo, are the court scenes. High drama in a typically boring format.

You feel like you have seen it many times before.
It might change as we go deeper, just 2 episodes so far. Not crazy about either one of the two main characters - never liked Kidman, and Grant seems to be too stiff, like a cardboard cutout. But we are pushing forward. :)
I've been accumulating the episodes on my DVR. Thought I'd binge them.
Thx for the synopsis and no spoilers.
