Somehow though through the years I missed seeing The Big Country which "Willie" directed starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Burl Ives (in his Oscar winning role), Charlton Heston and Chuck Connors. Both Peck and Wyler were unhappy with the finished film and they shared producing credit. Peck famously walked off the set near the end of shooting and the two didn't speak again for the rest of the shoot! Wyler seemed to be unhappy with most aspects of the film including the music score. Funny that in retrospect The Big Country theme and score is regarded as one of Hollywood's best! I really liked the film and IMO it is one of the great westerns ever put on film!
Follow Ups:
We watched The Big Country last night. Its a pretty good western, great acting, we enjoyed it.
Seems the title is a take off from the "Big Sky Country" moniker for Montana. But it was filmed in southern California, no mountains in the film, the scenery looks like mid west Nebraska to me.
One thing that I loved about Gregory Peck is that he always chose his roles to have a "morality' about them through-out his career. He was a great humanitarian to be sure. He and Simmons made a great pairing, it's a shame they never worked together again. It's also regrettable that Carroll Baker's career kind of fizzled out in her later years, I thought she was quite beautiful and talented. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is STILL my favorite western, but The Big Country comes damn close!

Artists are funny like that. They get an idea about what they are trying to achieve and if the results don't match their vision they are not happy. Sometimes the results are great in the minds of others, but the artist is still unhappy with the end product.
My wife is an artist, and I see that all the time. Often her work that I and others love, she hates. Then there are the things she is very pleased with...but everyone else just scratch their heads.
