This movie splits into 2 clean parts. The first part is good natured, if a bit slow. The super-dedicated English police officer is transferred to a scenic village, because he is making the rest of the officers (don't call them "the force") look bad. He is a fish out of water, gamely looking for arrests to be made. He is partnered with the police chief's son, a slow unmotivated officer, but one who loves such classics of police cinema as Point Break and Bad Boys 2.All this is preparation for the second part, in which these 2 mismatched partners, having studied proper procedure by viewing Bad Boys 2, proceed to kick serious ass in deliberately ludicrous fashion, complete with catch phrases ("playtime's over"). This is great fun. It's a blood bath, but totally absurd. Almost as silly as Monty Python, almost as much fun as Monty Python.

Follow Ups:
for the ridiculous movie it is. I was joking about how every british actor was in it, not far off really...It was kind of like The Stepford Wives meet Police Academy though better!

I actually enjoyed this more than I ever expected. With the main character (Nick Angel) being dead serious while all around him are a well orchestrated circus doing absurd things. There was an article posted (here?) the by creator (Shaun of the Dead as well) who said he thought America was finally ready for Brit Irony. Are most folks missing the quality of the cast here? It is so strong I would call it an ensemble more so than anything. There are many faces in the cast that should be recognizable to the average movie buff. (Even the first villain that faced Indiana Jones--the French archeologist).
I didn't here much laughter in the theater here BUT no one walked out either--so, I guess it made it.
I hate to recommend a movie and have someone not like it...as seen below, I guess others didn't think this was so good. I find comedies that are really funny to be rather rare, and I enjoy finding one that works for me.

Tunenut,
I thought it was a great film ...and your punchy review summarises it very well.

I was dissapointed with Hot Fuzz as well and concur with Daryl Zero's critique of it. Maybe I just don't "get" English humor as it seemed corny to me and not in a corny-well-done way, which I can appreciate.
I saw Hot Fuzz this afternoon and was very disappointed. The movie is way too loud and way too many fast cuts. The jokes are very uneven and it does not play like a Monty Python skit at all. The ultimate show downs are ludicrous and go on for a very long time. There are some funny parts but way too few. This is a rental at best.

A reminder that no matter what you do, you'll never please everybody. Fact remains that everyone I saw this with thought it was great for what it is.
