From your comments, it sounds like multichannel audio via HDMI is not an option. If that's really the case, then your buddies need to forget the BDP-S1 (see the link below) and wait until June/July for Sony's next Blu-ray player ($599). By the way, the PS3 can handle lossy 5.1 and 2-channel LPCM via its optical output: only multichannel LPCM and lossless 5.1/7.1 requires its HDMI connection.

going for the cheaper, and would most probably be inferior BDP-S300 is not an option.the decision will most likely rest on the S1's analog out for uncompressed LPCM. But still, they like to know what else are in both machines that determines sound and video quality reproduction.
Do you have any links to website that has people opening up their PS3 and showing the inside construction?

Do your buddies want to play CDs in their Blu-ray player? If so, the BDP-S1 can't do it, neither Pioneer's current Blu-ray player nor LG's Blu-ray/HD DVD player.

my friends all got their hi-end sacd players. no, the BD player is strictly for HD video only. Thanks again.
