Many TV's have optical audio outputs only, so you might have to use those,
as well as an optical to RCA line out converter box. The optical
out on TV may be a fixed level, so TV's volume control won't
work, so it helps to have a pre-amp/receiver with it's own remote.

It does have a single optical out as well as HDMI ARC out.
Would it be better to convert the optical or the HDMI?
Both converters would have power cords, correct?
Anything special I need to look for when buying a converter? Probably will order off of Amazon.
I was in the same predicament.
Luckily, they invented HDMI ARC.The ARC is an input/output.
I hooked the ARC from my TV to my BD player and then use the audio out of my BD player to my integrated amp. It works well for me.

Run cable box HDMI to TV HDMI1
Run Oppo BDP-83 HDMI to TV HDMI ARC1, then Oppo RCA to preamp.
I got a digital to analog audio converter yesterday. Do you think you're way will work as well? It would be one less thing to plug in...
You may have to play with it a bit. I'm using an attic antenna. That goes to my TV. and the ARC form TV to Oppo 103. I don't think if the 83 has ARC. I believe you need ARC at both ends.
You can have the cable box to the TV, and you can use the optical out of the TV to your oppo, and the oppo's analog out to your preamp.
Sorry I can't be more help.

Got an optical to analog converter from TV to preamp.Yet another power plug. The back of my credenza looks like a cable jungle.

I think the hdmi-arc is just for use with a compatible HT receiver with
that input. So in your case, the optical might be the only choice.Yes a converter box would probably have an AC wall wart plug.
