The daughter of Bondarchuk (who directed and starred as Pierre in "War and Peace") played the central film role in Tarkovksy's, "Solaris." And... Bainionis, the lead actor in "Solaris," who was a Lithuanian actor who had to have his lines dubbed into Russian: "Vladimir Putin once stated that Banionis' part in the 1968 Soviet spy film "Dead Season" was the reason why he joined the KGB.[3]

Bizarre, no? See what watching this stuff can lead to?

(I understand that Lithuania has a terrific film history--- but I just can't find any to watch. In the past, I reached out to the Lithuanian consulate, with no success).

Banionis was s great actor, the Dead Season was a slightly above average cliche spy film, but if you like him take a look at Nobody Wanted to Die - very good Lithuanian film. You are correct regarding their film history.

was offered role of Andrei but took "Hamlet," instead... He had first accepted Bondarchuk's offer, but political connections of "Hamlet"s' director forced the change. Actually, Tikhonov was the fourth choice! Also, for the role of Pierre, Bondarchuk had cast a Russian wrestling champ because he believed Tolstoy's continual insistence on Pierre's great size and its contrast to his immense frame and strength were invaluable. The champ, however, tried acting the role, but decided he wasn't very talented. By default, at the time, Bondarchuk assumed the character.

Lastly, if you saw the same director's version of "Boris Godunov," you witnessed him directing his son! (from second marriage)

Bondarchuk's and his wife's performances have been widely criticized, posted on October 30, 2020 at 08:00:21

Mainly due to their age - both were too old. But if you disregard the book, and just watch the movie, they both get passing grades.
