Been looking into 2020 lists and Bacurau has shown up on a few. Released in 2019 in Brazil but 2020 in the US. It is on Criterion channel so I checked it out.

Bacurau is a small village in a very rural part of Brazil. The villagers are struggling to survive. For reasons that are not made completely clear, there are dark forces at work against this community. At the very start, the viewer finds that a dam has cut off their water supply. Other vital resources are in short supply. And then some people are found on a farm outside of town shot to death.

This has the simplicity of a Western. A rural town trying to fight an outlaw gang. It is modern however, in that the outlaws have international connections, and echoes of colonialism and racism.

All in all, it's a nice watch, the eccentric small town characters, the Brazilian scenery, the music, and the classic Western vibe. One of the best of 2020? I don't know about that, but I enjoyed it.

Brazil that are recent, however, I'd highly recommend "Araby" and "Seven Years in May." Both of these are docu-dramas, films that muddy the water between documentary and fictional drama. Both are among the most powerful films I have ever seen.
