Saw my first Bimal Roy film last night... Madhumati. Have been a fan of Satyajit Ray for years, but was only vaguely aware of Bimal Roy. Must say it was a very entertaining and interesting film, and multi layered. Am looking forward to his other films currently streaming on Criterion.

I am amazed you liked the song and dance mystery romance cum ghost story. It is one of my favorites. Vyjayantimala is one of the best dancers as well as great beauties. I have seen several of Bimal Roy's movies who was known as a social critic. Some of the good ones are Do Bigha Zamin, Sujatha, Bandini, Parineeta, Yahudi and Kabuliwala which is a very good adaptation of Tagore's heart rending story.

His movies are also well known for the many melodious Hindi songs in them. The songs of Madhumati are favorites in Bollywood even after 65 years.

Enjoy

Bill

I watched Do Bigha Zamin last night, and plan on seeing them all!

The musical numbers are beautiful and hypnotic. I had a hard time staying awake during some of the music, not due to boredom but because they are so relaxing. Funny thing is, my reaction is totally different to Bollywood, which I don't really care for.

I have always enjoyed the music in Satyajit Ray's films, but Bimal Roy really shifts into high gear.

If you enjoyed the music of Madhumati I would recommend two movies which have very good songs, Baiju Bawra and Mughal e Azam. The latter is the famous fable of Emperor Akbar's son and future Emperor Jahangir falling in love with Anarkali, a dancer in the court. The female singer, the most popular Lata Mangeshkar is rather too shrill but that is what the masses like. The male singer Mohammed Rafi is different and very good.

Ravi Shanker composed the music for Satyajit Rai movies.

Best Wishes

Bill
