Cable goes to HDMI 3; HDMI 4 (ARC) goes to KEF LS50 Wireless II. Sound is very good, but TV resets itself to internal speakers after a short period. Optical output does not reset. Am I using the wrong hookup for HDMI audio? I'm not sure how ARC applies.

The ARC input is the one that you'd usually use for a receiver where the TV can turn the receiver on and off and automatically control it for switching of inputs. So, if you had a cable box and a DVD player connected to the receiver , the output of the receiver would go to the TV ARC input. Then, run the optical output to the KEF speakers.

You appear to have things connected according to instructions in the manual. Here are some things to confirm:

You have the latest firmware installed on both the Sony TV and KEF?
You are using cables certified for eARC?
You have disconnected and reconnected all HDMI cables?
You have performed a factory reset on both the TV and KEF?
You have configured the TV as follows:

Set the speaker settings to audio out, press HOME, then select [Settings]  [Sound] 
[Speakers]  [Audio system].
Set the HDMI CEC settings on the TV and AV receiver to allow for system audio control for ARC connections.

You have set the digital audio output setting for the TV to PCM (not Dolby, Bitstream, Auto or similar).

This link might be helpful to troubleshoot. It's possible that since the TV is old it is simply a case of a poor (unstable) implementation of ARC from Sony.

It also possible that KEF wants to see an eARC connection from the TV, not an ARC connection.

If all checks out above, it's time for a new TV if you want to use eARC.

I have since learned that both ARC and optical are compressed, and that I need eARC to realize the audio potential of LS50 Wireless II. Further, the Sony 65 XBR is 1080. I plan to buy a 75" 4K Sony with eARC the day after Thanksgiving, i.e., Black Friday. Sources are Cox Cable, Oppo 205, and Roon for Qobuz and Tidal.
