Gangster No. 1

Apparently, the Brits love their crime flicks as much as we did in the 30's. This is one of the best I've seen. The story starts out present day and flashs back to show us Malcom McDowell's climb to the top of David Thewlis' London gang. McDowell, master of seething rage and menace, did his turn quite well but was bested by Paul Betanny (Beautiful Mind) playing the younger McDowell. Betanny suceeded in being more seething with rage and menace than McDowell ever has at any point in his career. It is worth seeing just for that performance.

The story is predictable, but the performances are A's.
