Re: The Pianist: It's a bad sign when you look at your watch.

i think you have been jaded by too many films where the main character runs around waving his finger to the nazis, standing up for something, basically acting like a hero.

i think the pianist wants to show how for many, it was an experience of waiting it out in drab, locked rooms, growing hungry and limp-eyed over time, and avoiding death by luck (the random executions, being moved out just at the right time, the colonel, etc.) more than by his own actions. there's no philiosophizing about the meaning of life, no heroics, no honor, no shame, no morality being preached - the point of the story, and what the film celebrates, is that this man lived through it.
