The first stars Jason Patric and Ray Liotta and is a rather morbid look at the life of undercover cops. Acting is top notch in this one with Liotta doing a pretty decent 'bad cop' and JP as a stoic, but vacant, undercover cop on the edge. Cinematography is awesome in its conveyance of the cold hearted and bleak nature of the story. Shot mostly in Toronto in the darker winter months, even though the story is set in Detroit, life looks miserable. Think of a toned down, but bleaker TRAINING DAY. There is a pretty good twist at the end and all is not as it seems. Busta Rhymes has a cameo and plays---what else? A street thug.
Next up is Fulltime Killer, which is a frenetic, but well acted/made Hong Kong Action feature centered on the 'Assassins-ish' story of two Asian hit men competing against each other to be #1. Both are diametrically opposed in nature, but both are ruthless in their particular quests for the top spot.
Andy Lau, who is a very popular Hong Kongese actor/singer plays Tok, the bad bad guy and Takashi Sorimachi (an equally popular Japanese actor/singer) plays O. the good bad guy, so evidently they didn't settle for hacks. Kelly Lin is the love interest that both seek (she's pretty hot too!) and moves from the meek side of her character to somebody a bit more ambitious, in a fairly deft manner.
Anyway, the stunts and action are pretty 'fantastical,' but it's not too hokey and actually, quite graphic. There are some interesting methods employed by the characters when performing their tasks...not quite THE MECHANIC, but interesting nevertheless.
If you enjoy this genre or if you just like a good 'shoot-em-up' with little artistic value apart from what 'real life' might look like under these circustances, then this one's definitely a winner. It is subtitled.
I've watched it three times already and I'll try and buy a copy.
Anyway, I know NARC got a post or two at the year's beginning, but it's worth bringing up again.
