I too was moved by this story. I agree that Donnie travelled back through the portal to save his girlfriend. I think he also went back to "save the world", to knit back together the rent in the time-space continuum created by the "object" (the jet engine). I'm not sure I understand why he was laughing just before the end.
The movie is beautiful, funny, and disturbing. The special features and the website:
