Re: Harlan Ellison Story As Cinema.

The power behind this story (also a personal favorite) is the psychological transformation that the characters experience when placed under extreme stress. This is incredibly difficlut to portray in a visual medium like film and if anyone could bring it off, it would make that person a genius director in my book.

Dune (do it again: properly this time!)
Camp Concentration by Thomas M. Disch
The Tunnel Under the World by Fred Pohl
More than Human by Theodore Sturgeon
Cautionary Tales by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro (makes Pulp Fiction look like Children's storytime)

and probably lots more (ncluding the sequal to Bladerunner, which if no-one else will write, then I will :-) ).
