In the spring of 1962, Marilyn Monroe began work on what would be her last appearance on film... George Cukor's Something's Gotta Give co-starring her friend Dean Martin. The film experienced many delays as Monroe famously called in sick numerous times over several months including once when she flew to NYC to sing Happy Birthday for JFK. Consequently the studio reached their tipping point and fired Monroe. Monroe who was the most famous sex symbol in films threatened to sue the studio, and was ultimately reinstated with a new contract to boot! Monroe was excited to return to work but famously succumbed to an overdose of barbiturates. Cukor tried in vain to recast the film, but Dean Martin refused to continue without Monroe. The project was ultimately shelved until a couple years later when it was revived as Move Over Darling with Doris Day and James Garner. The completed footage of Monroe's film sat on the shelves at 20th Century Fox for years until archivists resurrected it into a short film of completed scenes. What the completed scenes show is at 36 years of age just how beautiful Monroe was and she never lost that unexplainable quality that she exuded on screen. It of course features Monroe's famous nude pool scene which was the first of its kind. SO sad that she was lost at such a young age....
