"The Defiant Ones" 1958; "Elmer Gantry" 1960: Comments

"The Defiant Ones": Directed by Stanley Kramer; featuring Sidney Poitier,
Tony Curtis, Lon Chaney Jr. An excellent film with tense moments throughout; however, I got the feeling that the tobacco industry financed
its production.
"Elmer Gantry": A dramatic masterpiece; directed by Richard Brooks; starring Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons and Shirley Jones; 5 Oscar nominations; Lancaster won Oscar and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor,
an Oscar for Jones as Best Supporting Actress, and Brooks an Oscar for
Best Screenplay. My favorite line: "The big difference between you and me is
that I believe...I REALLY BELIEVE!" - Sister Sharon (Simmons) to Elmer
(Lancaster). - AH
