Her death came as a surprise to me, more than Johns. I definitely expected her
to survive, and redeem herself, at least partially, through the affirmative
act of commandeering the ship to safety and saving the remaining party.
I was ambivalent about Riddick, more expecting him to die than not, in a final heroic act
that would belie his normally ruthless character. I was wrong on both counts.
Incidentally, I was impressed with the large amount of physical restraint used by
Riddick - it made for a greater psychological tension. Of course, it's
different when the flick at times becomes "Riddick Vs The Flying Creatures", then he really kicks butt - reminded me of Goldberg!
It was hard to see those creatures until later on - at first, they appeared on partially down in the tunnels - only squidlike tenacles(?) could be briefly
seen floating and waving in the air; then en masse,
they looked like bats, but up closer and individually they looked more like a combination
of a minature pteradactyl, with a wide "Alien"-shaped head and a huge, wide
mouth sporting a set of big, long chompers! Those toothies reminded me of the Tasmanian
Devil-like monster's ones in the episode "The Crate", one of the stories featured
in the movie, "Creepshow".
