It still holds up quite well. The premise is clever and there's a genuinely creepy tone to the film. It was made by Hammer Films who made all the great Christopher Lee / Peter Cushing 1960s horror movies. Even though all of these were relatively low budget productions they were made by people who cared about what they were doing and didn't condescend to the audience or the material. The acting in Hammer movies is generally very good too.
