Almost Famous

24.8.223.101

'Nother DVD that I purchased without first seeing it. Liked it very much, suspect that it'll improve upon subsequent viewings (the hallmark of every truly good film, I imagine), and consider it to be one of the more outstanding releases of a truly weak year-in-film. To be sure, it's got some Cameron Crowe schmaltz in places (he makes unabashedly feel-good movies, doesn't he?), but is for the most part leavened by virtue of a truly pathetic and decidedly non-saccharine core (the film's got growing pains, and experiences the good with the bad).

Cast performances are first-class all around; in particular, the young lad who plays William Miller (aka, Cameron Crowe) -- Patrick Fugit -- is excellent. And Phillip Seymour Hoffman kicks serious ass as rock critic Lester Bangs, to boot! And -- oh yes -- Mmmmm, Kate Hudson!

Choice feel-good-but-still-not-*quite*-treacly moment: A bus full of bedraggled rockstars, groupies, roadies and associated hangers-on singing a lulling collective rendition of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer."

Great soundtrack, by the way: I had fun trying to identify all of the tunes.

What do all y'all think?
