""If you were REALLY going to that tiny island for the rest of your life, and you were given the choice between these two admittedly drekky films to take with you as the only film you were allowed to watch for the remainder of your life - it wouldn't be the Gladiator - would it?""
It wouldn't be Caligula either. That's for sure:)

""Digging throught the two piles of drek with long stick, we shall still find more grain for birds in Caligula.""
A sparrow is happy to find a grain in a pile of shit. A critic is happy when he does the opposite. No offence.

""To say it required ANY acting is laughable - everything is binary there, with just two bits of resolution that were required.""
Huh?

""And besides, EVERY movie with Helen Mirren is a must see... I am sure we can agree on THAT one, can't we?"'
Ever seen Cal? It is exactly what it means in our language.
Passion of Ayn Rand was drek with a capital D. A recent Teaching Ms.Tingle doesn't even need to be called a motion picture. But, yeah, she's ok. At least she had academic training and some good upbringing. The only film with her that I'd recommend is The Cook, His Wife etc, and that one because of the unusual premise. If you saw one of her films, I wouldn't recommend seing others; she's the same in all of them, like John Wayne. I wouldn't mind seing her on stage doing Moliere or something.

""I will just repeat a couple of lines from the brief review""
Please no more reviews. Taken from another online rag -"Perhaps the ultimate thinking man's sex symbol, Helen Mirren...". Yeah, those warts on her face - mmmm, yammie.

""Anyway, as they say, just my two rubles... and you know how much it is worth.""
Yeah, I know :)
