...saw "The Sky Will Fall" with Isabella Rossellini and Jeroen Krabbé. There ARE inescapable parallels to De Sica's Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini. But these parallels are short.

Andrea Frazzi is definitely NOT De Sica. The film, while not bad at all, is just too simplistic and perhaps trivial. And while Krabbe is good, as usual, Rossellini is apparently not sure why she is there.

You will love the kids, and there are many of them, but kids do not make the whole movie. And most of the rest is just a sketch, not a finished canvas.

I do feel strange criticizing this basically very good film, when there are Matrixes and Titanic's and SPR's out there, but this one is supposed to be real and it is. It is just that in that "real" game we have very different players, and standing too close to the shadow of De Sica is simply too dangerous - for it may completely cover you.

And it is that shadow that to large degree destroys the effect, like singing Casta Diva just few minutes after Maria Callas, for perhaps the memories of "The Garden..." are still too alive in many of us.

But if it ever makes it to the theater near you, stop by and see it, it is worth it, even if you will walk away with the same uneasy feeling as I did.
