*...and not under the influence of various mind-altering substances....*

I saw the film during the opening release and I WAS under the
influence of a mind-altering substance, a fairly powerful one:
MDA (Methylenedioxyamphetamine). I am sure this chemical greatly
enhanced my aesthetic appreciation of the fantastic visuals - the
purring leopard in one of the opening scenes for example - and helped
to diminish my adversness to films that creep along at a snail's
pace like 2001. I haven't watched the film a second time, and
have no desire to, as I stopped ingesting such powerful substances as
MDA
long ago. I just don't think I could sit through 2001 with a straight
head, I'd be bored sh*tless! As for the story, I believe it might
have been the noted sci-fi writer, Frederick Pohl, who strongly
disliked it for some reason that I now forget. According to John
Clute in his Illustrated Book Of Science Fiction, 2001 earned a
Hugo Award in 1969 for its "intellectual audacity", and is considered
a "touchstone of the genre". - AH
