Creme de la Creme: The Best French Films - 1927 to 1998.

Prolegomena: Below is a select list of the very best French films
via the ratings of Leonard Maltin´s Movie & Video Guide (up through
the year of 1997). The 30 creme de la creme films comprise about
1/20th of the 605 films listed in the guide; all garnered a 4 star
(superb) rating, the highest possible in Matlin´s system. No doubt
some have already attained classic masterpiece status, as some will
in the future. For the record: 106 films adorned a 3&1/2 (excellent)
rating; 193 films received a 3 star (good) rating; 144 films got a
2&1/2 star (fair) rating; 96 films received a 2 star (mediocre) rating, 30 films got a 1&1/2 star (poor) rating, and 6 films were awarded a
1 star (wretched) rating, or in Maltin vernacular, da BOMB! Evidently, Maltin even rewards the dogs for barking; fortunately, they
represent less than 1/100th of the listed films. - Au Revoir, AH.
