Having seen the Bakshi version during it's initial run, I'm sorry to say that it just wasn't very memorable for me. The recent release succeeds in connecting with the audience where Bakshi's version left me cold.
Personally, I don't think that Lord of the Rings benefits from the limited animation and layered rotoscoping techniques Bakshi employed. Of course this is just my opinion; YMMV.
