Watched "In the Company of Men" last night

I was expecting more. What was all the fuzz about?

I felt the director didn't know where to stop to make it interesting, and simply went too much into his personal indulgence, losing and irritating the viewer in process. That made the characters too shallow, like after the steamroller. They would have more life and points of interest had he stopped a few steps from declaring the oh-too-obvious.

Subtlety apparently not in his locution at the time.

Would I rent something like that? No way. But catching it on a free channel is whole lot better than perhaps 99% of what's typically there.

The director Neil LaBute's next film, Your Friends and Neighbors had certainly more life to it... plus it had Catherine Keener, for whom I have a soft spot.
