Known in English as "I'm Going Home", this is an exquisitely photograhed film by Manuel De Oliveira, 94 years old at the time. Each scene reflects the wisdom of a director who has been making films since the early thirties. It is the story of an elderly actor
who loses his wife, daughter, and son-in-law early in the film, and then lives with a housekeeper and his grandson, with whom he has little contact. It is really a study of the transitory nature of existance and how we desperately try to be rememered in some fashion,
how routine brings small daily pleasures, how ever meaningless in the long run. Michel Piccoli stars, with excellent support from John Malcovich and Catherine Deneuve. Highly recommended and available on a great Image DVD transfer in the original 1.66 aspect ratio.
