to satisfy Ebert's need for accuracy and tone. Wolfgang modernized the characters by humanizing them. That is obvious. Only O'Toole came close to delivering the old-time, classic characterization of toga epics that Ebert wanted to see.

I find usually find Ebert agreeable, but not this time. He was looking for too much and missed the energy of the film.
