Interestingly, the extended versions of the first two movies were released theatrically beforeand with the release of ROTK. So one could say that there are two theatrical versions of the first two movies and one could also say that they are both fair representations of the director's vision and not some lame revision well after the fact with new footage created after the fact. I also prefer the extended versions of the first two movies.
