Take the cable car from Powell St. (just below Union Square) to the wharf at Ghirardelli Square. As you come down the hill toward the wharf there are spectacular views of the Bay to the west (even better with a full moon). At the wharf stop into the Buena Vista cafe for an Irish Coffee (where they were invented) and walk around the shops in Ghirardelli and the Cannery. Pier 39 is within walking distance and has stuff the whole family will enjoy - don't miss the sea lions in back of Pier 39.
