"Rebecca"

This is the two part Masterpiece Theater remake of the 1940 Oscar winning Hitchcock film with Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. It is different from the movie in tone and features mainly unknown (to me) actors with the exception of Faye Duanaway as Mrs. Nan Hopper and Diane Rigg chewing up the scenery as Mrs. Danvers.

The strory, based on the nest selling novel by Dapne Demauier, has an innocent twentysomething paid companion in 1927 Monte cCrlo swept off her feet by the rich, brooding widower Maxim de Winter. They marry and he takes her to his ancestral home in coastal England, wher she has trouble fitting in, a situation made more difficult by the fiendish household head Mrs. Danvers, who adored de Winter's last wife. After a series of social blunders the heroine finds out exactly how the first Mrs. de Winter met her death.

As I said, different from the movie but it has its own charms.
