Even if somewhat uneven, this is a great film that already shows the signature of a great master. It is simply a must, given the masterful directing (incredibly well done detective story for 1949), wonderful acting by young Mifune, and, most of all, Takashi Shimura, who plays his older partner and who gives simply unforgettable performance.
