I think the story contains an explanation, but it was a familiar “Stargate†idea of original intelligence and I was losing interest at that point. Supposedly, land exposure allowed human worker slaves to build the pyramid structure now below the ice pack. The whole purpose of the pyramid was to propogate the Aliens at an appropriate time and to contain and augment the Predator's objective to hunt and conquer.
