Among the films I watched this weekend, "Japanese Story" was a nice little gem. Toni Collette stars as a geologist told to provide a tour of a mine and the Austrailian countryside to the son of a Japanese part owner of the mine. Needless to say, they get stuck in the dessert. For a brief time. They resume their trip. More cannot be said without ruining the plot.
Collette solidifies my opinion that she is one of the best actresses working in film today. Here she plays the same person throughout the film, but her charachter is running off completely different emotions over the course of the film. She is able to pull off the feat without the viewer being able to pinpoint what she has done. Simple facial expressions, a different glint behind the eye, tone of voice? Excellent performance. Very good film.
