Though he does not emphasize it in the film the writer/director was attracted to this material by the fact that the Columbian drug smugglers send four or more "mules" at a time because if one is caught attention is directed away from the others. Sometimes, he tells us in the commentary, the smugglers even tip off the authorities as to the identity of one of the mules. But as he filmed he emphasized the story of one of the mules. I was fascinated by this movie and found parts of it harrowing. I tried to imagine myself in a strange country and culture with no facility in the local language and being chased by thugs out to kill me. Unlike others here I think this one desreves all the praise it garnered.
