Our book discussion group didn't like the award winning short novel upon which the film is based, attribuiting that opinion to cultural differences. But the movie overcomes any by simplifying tha simple story even further. It takes place in southern Italy in 1978 and involves a 10 year old boy who discovers another boy chained in a pit, the victim of a kidnapping. Through TV and overhearing snatches of household conversation it gradually dawns on him that his parents and neighbors mayhave something to do with the crime. In the meantime he befriends and feeds the victim and eventually tries to help him escape. The cinematography is simply stunning in this coming of age tale, which deftly captures the hero on the brink of adolecense
