"Mutiny on the Bounty"

Before I watched this remake last night I caught a brief interview withn Christopher Plumber, who plays Boston's embattled Cardinal Bernard Law in an upcoming TV movie. He said that even the most villianous role should have a piece of humanity in it. I was remionded of this later while watching the 1962 "...Bounty". Trevor Howard brings to the Bligh role a more rounded sense than Charles Laughton's portrayal. Marlon Brando's Fletcher Christian comes across as a fop, most propbably intentional on the actor's part. In one small scene below decks we see him with a weird headpiece smoking an equally weird pipe, almost a charicature of the fop.

The MGM film was shot in 70 MM Ultra-Panavision and is very beautiful It does show the attempt to round the tip of South America, something not shown in the earlier film. Now it's on to the best of the three, the Mel Gibson/Anthony Hopkins version called simply "The Bounty".
