"The Cotton Club"

This is a wonderful movie, a fact made more astonishing when you consider its troubled history. Francis Ford Coppola was brought in to rescue it and he turned a lemon into lemonade. It is at once a musical, two love stories, and a violent ganster flick. The music, mostly by Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, is spot on in terms of authenticity. The periodic violence is of "Godfather" like intensity. And also like "The Godfather", the cast was perfectly chosen. This has been a long time favorite of mine ever since I brushed away a tear in the theater when I first heard the (beloved by me) Duke Elington music which opens the film.
