What a pleasure to have an entertainment vehicle that allows one to observe Sir Alec "acting" for several hours.
The story is immensely too complicated and spun out (a problem with filming a book too literally) but the level of acting is so superb from the supporting cast that it is almost a superflous observation.
The world-weariness of Smiley, who realizes that good men occasionally may do evil but to do so on a regular, professional basis eternally damns one, convincingly is brought home.
To him, the challenge of the game is all: moralizing, pontificating, and glorifying a murderous business is left to others.
That it was filmed entirely on locations throughout Europe only adds to the many delights.
