"Captain Corelli's Mandolin"

Bruce Maddsen directed this WW II tale of the collision of three cultures (Greek, Italian, and German) on a Greek Island. Despite a good cast (Nicholas Cage, John Hurt, Penelope Cruz, Irene Pappas, Christain Bale, the movie only has a few meaninful moments. Briefly, doctor-in-traing under her doctor father, Cruz falls in love (at first sight) with fisherman Bale, he goes off to war after becoming engaged, Italian Captain Cage arrives, she falls in love with him, Germans arrive, and there is interaction between all three groups. I agree with Ebert's two star rating and also with his observation that authentic ethnic actors should have been used with subtitles. Excelent DTS sound although with too dynamic a range (turn it up to hear the dialogue and the explosions will blow you away).
