Home Films/DVD Asylum

Movies from comedy to drama to your favorite Hollyweird Star.

Never mind the quality, feel the width.

I saw Shinji Aoyama’s ’Eureka’ (2000) after a bout of bad Hollywood, when it came out here, kind of like a cure.
A Japanese film at 3 1/2 hours, and in black & white…
In fact, with a programmed break half way through, it worked…the initial itch after 11/2 hour subsides and you dreamily hit the straight run.
Fortunately, Eureka holds up, due to the characters and the controlled use of black & white and color as part of the narrative, it’ll hypnotize you like a King cobra.
After, I came across his later (2001) film ‘Desert Moon’, on a cheap independent DVD label, running in at a mere 2 hours & 10 minutes.
I never made the first total viewing, at home, and tried again recently – the cold story of a Japanese Steve Jobs going downhill and offering his estranged wife a punk lover meanders off into void boredom as if trying to emulate 60’s European cinema…yawn.
What’s your longest film?
