Grizzly Man: a brilliant document

I grabbed this at the video store. It was when I put the movie on that I saw that the film was directed by Werner Herzog. I wondered what this is going to be.

This is close to a great film. It reaches the deepest levels of humor and absurdity, and then bounces back from that to document an incredible life. This man's life became so extraordinary and its documentation so incredible. This is a one of a kind piece of filmaking.

Werner does not fade in the background as you figure a film director should. Rather, there is a sense of him just showing off his brilliance. He toys around with the full aspect of this man's life perhaps with an understatement that enables the film to reach its remarkability.

Still, the most remarkable aspect of the film is what the man did: his life with the grizzlys. The fact that his life ended the way that it did only adds something, perhaps a certain angst and irony, to the situation but does not devalue the man's accomplishment.

The man's accomplishment is remarkable and shines as more remarkable than what Werner has done. The material outshines the director which ultimatly makes it a successful piece of film-making.
