Yes, granted Visconti did made a good use of his being woody, the only problem for me is
that he is always this way, in any of his acting.
And Cocteau did make a better job on him ( ! ) avec La belle .....
On the whole a bit too academic.
Why did not come Marais come on the day that was fixed? How did she knows where he worked, why, why... it let this appears more as an exercise of style.

No, I do not feel this film to have much power, unlike others you cited, it just lack what Italians films have a plenty...
