hated "The Constant Gardener" did so because they were either uneasy with depiction of such squalor or they are rabid capitalists and found an indictment of a major industry... cruel and unsympathetic.
For those who cannot stomach scenes of mass privation and need, it will be best to stay far away from this film. The director provides an unflinching look at how several African nations are struggling to deal with AIDS victims.
No, I didn't find it depressing because of the many scenes of people helping each other, even when there was little "hope" for recovery and absolutely no remuneration to be had outside of the most basic: love.
The scenes of Africa, which like a beautiful woman cannot take a poor photograph, were magnificent in Kiarastomi's understated way. One extended scene of a night during a tremendous thunderstorm only could have been filmed by this director.
A quiet, measured film that I'll never forget.
