Tony Leung proves he's one of the world's great contemporary leading men in this close examination of love. His progression from disinterest to interest to infatuation to love is a wonder, with nary a hint of histrionics, bombast, or "acting."
This film has a Proustian quality in its deliberateness, attention to detail, and inevitability.
The score is haunting and skillfully used: it compliments scenes instead of announcing or dominating them.
If ever there was an epic film of love (or a film of epic love...), "In the Mood for Love" is it.
