"The Purple Rose of Cairo"

Woody Allen wrote and directed this very clever film about a Depression era movie character who steps off the screen and leaves the reel world to enter the real world. He becomes enamored of would be waitress Mia Farrow, who is unhappily married to spouse abuser Danny Aelio. Fearing an epedemic of this sort of thing the studie sends the real actor (Jeff Daniels plays both roles) to investigate. There are many extremely funny parts, especially when the remaining actors in the film within the film start to talk to the audience.

This of course makes a great double bill with Buster Keaton's masterpiece, "Sherlock, Jr.", where the opposite happens
