Finding a derth of compelling new or yet to be viewed recent films,i turned to the past. I just finished the BBC/Paramount 1979 mini series Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy which i watched after watching Smiley's People which was produced a couple of yeaRs after TTSP.I was a Highshool student when the first series played and a young man about town when the later did so i never watched them.I found watching it in the reverse order interesting,I liked being prepared for TTSP by seeing the later series first as i had a stronger framework of familiarity with the characters and the references in the secOnd series to their pastS which i then saw in the initial movie.This was a really brillaintly thought out and produced spy story that really challenged all my powers of retention to keep pace with all the activites of all the characters.I love films that are this densely layered and demand intense attention and powers of reason to appreciate.Alec Guiness,what an actor.Masterfull how he could elicit laughter from me with the most matter of fact lines in otheriwse grave and somber scenes.I found myself thinking how much his presence is missed.Anyway,if you're hard up for something to add to your Netflix queue,Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy and Smiley's People, two three CD six part each mini series from more than thirty years ago were highly satisfying.
