"Zelig"

One doesn't think of special effects when one thinks of a Woody Allen film but there are plenty here. He has cinematographer Gordon Willis film this "documentary" so that the film stock looks like vintage film in use in the thirties. There are numerous shots of Zelig (Allen) with historcial figures and there is an ingenious film within the film that is exceedingly clever. Also, real intellecuals periodically comment on the fictional Zelig as if he were a real historical person. A fun film worthy of multiple viewings.
