John Boorman directed this semi-autobiographical film about a nine year old boy and his family and their adventures in a London suburb in the early days of WW II. When released it was aclaimed in England because of the accuracy and detail of its scenes. In what is one of her finest roles, Sarah Miles portrays the mother, who has to deal with getting sleepyhead children into the backyard bomb shelter in the middle of the night as well as a rebellious teen age daughter who has fallen in love with a Canadian soldier and who becomes pregnant. Miles has to be the backbone of the fasmily since her husband has been drafted early on. Toward the end of the film the locale switches to rural England, as the family moves to Miles' grandparent's estate. Very gentle and well done although the laserdisc has an extremely poor transfer.
