The Proposition

This movie has a screenplay by Nick Cave and those familiar with his music won't be expecting a light romp. Indeed, this is very dark and violent. It is similar to an American western, but set in Australia, in some godforsaken place where flies cover everyone. There is the lawman who thinks he is bringing civilization, there is casual violence against the aboriginal population and there is a criminal who is both psychopathically violent and impossible to catch. And so a deal is made with the criminal's brother. The deal is the first scene of the movie. The resolution of this deal has an inevitability and however it turns out, it is going to be violent. This is really a very well done and gripping movie. The atmosphere is set with many scenes of natural beauty in the harshest and most unforgiving of desert landscape. There is a real tension as things start go out of control. I was reminded of The Wild Bunch and that is unmistakably an influence here. I was a little let down at the end. It didn't feel convincing. But up to then, I was with this the whole way.
